1st January - Salen/Glenaros
House A search of birch scrub and bracken along the Glenaros track
surprisingly revealed no sitting Woodcock. Perhaps this sustained period
of cold weather has forced many of the birds that would normally overwinter
on the island to leave in search of milder climes ? A loose flock
of 12 Wood Pigeons (unusual local resident) were in the vicinity of the
Beech wood near Glenaros House, as were 12 predominately 1st Winter immature
male Blackbirds that were feeding together among the leaf litter. The location,
age and behaviour of these birds suggests that they are continental immigrants.
A small number of Chaffinches feeding on fallen beech nuts contained a
single,
beautiful male Brambling, which was a delightful
way to start the New Year. Ruth Fleming and Stuart Gibson
