31st Saw a Painted
Lady today 31st at Haunn, Treshnish and my neighbours saw a Red
Admiral at Ballygown on the 25th. Both these are records are earlier
than shown in South-west Scotland butterfly Atlas,
I have also seen Peacock and Small Tortoiseshell

30th Tobermory. 11.55pm : a Barn Owl hunting alongside
the main road on the outskirts of Tobermory.
29th Tobermory. A male Yellowhammer in song was
an unexpected surprise and a first for the Mull Magic garden. Ruth Fleming

14thThree Lochs & Fidden. Nine Whooper Swans
on Loch Sguabain, with flock of 40 Skylarks feeding on the machair at Fidden
were highlights of our day. A large, deep-winged white gull seen flying
away from us at Fidden was thought most likely to have been a 2nd W Glaucous

group together and two in summer plumage), two Red-throated Divers, single
1st W Iceland Gull, 14 Teal and five Goldeneye.

in the air together for a protracted period of time was an awesome sight!

9th 2 Purple Sandpipers at Lainne Sgeir, Calgary,

9th March Loch Beg Plenty of Skylark singing. The
3 Whooper Swans flew off and then returned half an hour later then flew
off again 3 hours later and then the four birds that are still present

5th: Loch na Keal, 1 adult Mediteranean Gull off
Killiechronan. This is the second record for Mull, the first being an adult
at Torrans, nr Pennyghael on 15 Dec 1992, 3 Slavonian Grebes off
from Kellan, 2 Iceland Gulls at Knock outfalls and 2 at Killiechronan,
45 Fieldfares and 1 Redwing at Kiliechronan.Prasad.
4th 18 Teal at Kellan Farm, circa 20 Goldeneye

3rd saw at least 3 Iceland Gulls behind lobster
boats around the Treshnish Point area. I won't report them any more unless
i see large numbers. Basically right now if you can find a lobster boat
you should also see a white-winged gull. Also yesterday 2 SEO at Reudle.

Gulls, first returning Lesser Redpoll of Spring, two singing Skylarks,
singing Stonechat amidst lots of early season wader activity : Curlew,

APeregrine again on Tobermory main street church. Also saw the Pied-billed
Grebe at Salen just to northwest of the old boat. May have caught a
glimpse of the Red-necked Grebe at Laggan but weather turned foul.

of Lesser Redpolls in the forestry just past Achnacraig on th Glen
Bellert road, quite a few Common Crossbills also showing well in the woods
some very close giving excellent views.

Enroute back to 17:00 Craignure Ferry, Garry spoke to a Birder who said
he was surveying numbers of Great Northern Diver off the coast of
Mull. Last night he counted 69 GNDivers in Loch Na Keal!

Guests here who know next
to nothing about birds described an auburn coloured bird of prey with a
forked tail.They drew the fork for me and it was like a Red Kite. It
was seen on the coast road on south of Calgary bay Prasad

an extremely rare north american vagrant, a Pied billed
grebe here today and yesterday, better photos to follow. very illusive
but was in company with a Little grebe. This is only the second
record for Argyll, the first also being on Mull in June-July 1998

disturbed flock of 15 - 20 Siskins and several Crossbills from plantation.
One male Crossbill heard singing in flight and single Redpoll seen

12th Lochdon: two Jays seen near the eaglewatch
caravan flew over and into trees oposite. Andy Oldacre
12th Overlooking Loch Spelve: Seven White-tailed
Eagles (including five immature birds in air together!), three Golden
Eagles (two adults), pair of Hen Harriers, pair of Buzzards and Kestrel
produced a truly 'raptorlicious' day out in the hills. Also, two singing
Skylarks, back on the hill, made us feel that Spring may be just around

Eagles (including immature bird), 6 - 8 Slavonian Grebes, many of which
on the turn from non-breeding to breeding plumage, five Bar-tailed Godwits

9th Dervaig: our first yellowhammer (female)
in ten years in the garden. In might be common on Mull but not at
Tigh Fraoich. A small group (10/12) of fieldfares flew over

Crossbills, male Siskin in 'butterfly' display flight, group of half-a-dozen
thrushes travelling together included three Fieldfares and three 'grey-backed'
Song Thrushes (perhaps of continental race?), Woodcock and partly
singing male Goldcrests in Langamull forest. 2 Golden Eagles very
high in sky, being mobbed by 6 Hooded Crows or Ravens; 2 immature (white
wing tags) White-tailed Eagles, a Sparrowhawk and 22 Lapwings at Croig.20
returning Meadow Pipits and 8 Skylarks, Langamull beach, with 6 Great
Northern Divers, offshore. Woodcock flushed at Penmore. 2 Greenshanks,

This morning 11/03/08 -
saw 3 Redshank, 3 Curlew, a pair of Lapwing, several Oyster Catchers, 2
Heron on the smallrocky outcrop in Bunessan Bay off the Ardtun Road. A
female Hen Harrier hunted for some time on the seaward side of the road
also.

billed Gull has moulted it's Winter head streaking and is now a 3rd S individual,
